In recent years, multiple states have enacted Employment Nondiscrimination Acts (ENDAs) in order to prohibit workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Currently, ENDAs exist in twenty-two states, including the District of Columbia (Martell, 2013). Even though ENDAs work to end sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace, they need to be extended on a federal basis in order to be maximally effective. This is because sexual orientation discrimination still widely exists in employment today. Tilcsik’s (2011) audit study of hiring discrimination among openly gay men proves that this type of discrimination is still heavily present in the labor market. Secondly, because the audit-study ranges across geographic locations that vary in attitudes and legislation in regard to this issue, it provides information on how different laws and attitudes affect the probability of gay people being hired in various labor markets. Lastly, the study gives insight to the power of stereotyping in sexual orientation discrimination. Prior audit studies have not performed similar insight into stereotyping. Tilcsik (2011) effectively implies sexual orientation on job applications without bringing in confounding variables by using a pair of resumes. Both fictitious resumes were graduating seniors in college, seeking entry-level positions. The â€Å"experimental group,† refers to the resume of a hypothesized homosexual male. The resume signaled sexual orientation by showing experience in a â€Å"gay community organization,† specifically by stating the subject served several semesters as a treasurer. This applies rele vancy to a job application because it highlights organizational and financial skills. The â€Å"control group,† refers to a similar resume of a hypothesized heterosexual male that did not disclose group membership in a gay community organization. Currently, the United States trails far behind other industrialized countries in the production and implementation of better suited, environmentally friendly technology. If this continues to be a trend, the U.S can lose their comparative advantage in technology to countries who would have access to enhanced and innovative technology to produce at a much cheaper cost. Change. We must all learn to deal with it. But for me, changing schools three times in four years has been my greatest challenge. From my first move to Arizona at age six, to my most recent move to Texas at age thirteen, change has been a constant. But the transition from parochial school to public, and back again to private has changed me the most. I spent kindergarten through seventh grade in a small, Catholic school in the Phoenix area. When we moved to a North Texas suburb where parochial schools are few, my parents enrolled me in the district’s mammoth, public middle school. I made the necessary adjustments and thrived: making new friends, earning a starting spot on the basketball and volleyball teams, and striving for straight A’s in honors and advanced classes. I befriended my teachers, basked in their encouragement and love, and savored the unique hairstyles and expressions of individuality in each student’s dress and hairstyle. So before my ninth-grade year my parents reprioritized, pulled us out of public school, and put my brothers and me back in a private, more protected environment. In this smaller, Christian, college-prep school, I have not only experienced great humility, struggling with hours of homework and legions of tests, but my religious beliefs have been challenged, broadened and strengthened. I feel I am better prepared for the next phase of change in my life: choosing a college. I am blessed to have been identified as a top-ranked basketball player and have received offers to play for and attend many of the country’s top schools. Therein lies my biggest challenge yet: where to spend my next four years. I feel tested in every way, mainly in the realm of my core beliefs. Do I bow to name recognition and chose the most prestigious program? Do I solely seek a school with national championship potential, putting academic goals second? Or might I find a perfect combination of both? I believe Stanford University represents the latter, where each student admitted is exceptional in his or her chosen field. I know I will be challenged academically and athletically at this world-renowned institution. I will be encouraged to room and mingle with the entire student population, not just other athletes. The expectations of a Stanford student are fierce, and even my religious views may be tested. But thanks to the change I have experienced, the myriad moves I have made, and the necessary adjustments to different environments and people, I believe I have the confidence as a leader, a learner, and a faithful believer that I will stand strong and stay true to myself. I feel prepared for this next chapter of life. And it is all thanks to change.

Polaroid Stories I have never been to a live play performance before, but I have seen one on video. I loved it as though I was reading a great storybook; being able to stop at anytime and pick up where I left off, but I never thought about the relationship between the performers and the audience. Nor did I think of the impact of all of the aspects that deal with creating a play and giving a great performance. For my first live play I went to go see Polaroid Stories; a play I thought would not be so shocking to a first time audience member. I was wrong; this play almost literally looked me in the face and slapped me. The play had the look of a run down playhouse that had little funding and little direction, but I later pieced it together that they made it part of the play, and obviously you are not supposed to see those who are back stage directing. Additionally, I over looked the performers' costumes, the stage lighting, and set design; everything I took for granted. I thought I could see the props and everything that was strategically placed or used, but I missed them all. I was surprised at how these people in charge took the look of a run down playhouse and made it their stage. This was life on life's canvas and it was totally different from watching television. Everything became so tangible and real. For a moment I lost my self and really got into the play. I didn't think I was watching a group of people on a set acting for my entertainment, I felt I was actually watching life. As if I stepped out of my body for a moment and walked the streets seeing the life of these street kids. You can't exactly get that from television; your mind is constantly running when you watch this play. The fact that the stage was right in front of me does not compare to television. If I took one step forward I would have been on stage, if I wasn't already. One of the actors I felt breeze by me, and I could smell the smoke of another actor's cigarette. I kept having the feeling I was there, that the whole stage was really outside. The stage was the one aspect that kept me believing. The way everything was setup, the closeness it brought between the performers and the audience, and the sounds it created when the actors walked across it or banged on it. I felt apart of the stage and I guess that is why I felt so close to the action of the stories, and how I got lost in them. Going to this play was a new experience, but watching this play was a crash course in the emotion you can actually get from the way everything is setup. This new media had an impact on me that you can not get from television. And I've come to the assumption that you can save lots of money by going to good theatres like this, than by purchasing surround sound for television. You can hear the closeness with all the speakers you need, but you'll never get that tangible feeling as if the performers or the stage are really there.
